Shetland Tweed from W Bill

Since its establishment by William Bill as a purveyor of fine woollens in the bustling, Victorian market town of Mold, North Wales, in 1846, W Bill has enjoyed an unparalleled reputation for sourcing the best, most iconic clothes from around the British Isles. And wool from local sheep raised on pastures in Scotland’s remote North Atlantic archipelago, the Shetland Islands, is about as iconic as it gets. Due to the harsh subarctic climate, the indigenous Shetland sheep have survived by developing a fleece whose natural, wool fibres are prized for their softness and warmth. Yarn spun from these fibres can be knitted into vibrant, colourful, cosy sweaters, including the famous fair isle knitwear which also originates from this region, or woven into the soft, luxurious jacketing designs available here.

Whipcord & Cavalry Twills from W Bill

This collection combines two storied weaves of durable, robust British cloth - whipcord and cavalry twill, in one 29-strong collection.

WHIPCORD
First up are the whipcords. This quality is characterized by a steep, pronounced single twill weave on the surface, or ‘face’ of the cloth. Spun of all wool, whipcords are woven to produce a smooth hand with a mélange twill face and a soft, lightly napped reverse. The quality is also referred to as a ‘covert’ or ‘covert coat’, after the popular short topcoats of the same name made from this fabric.

There are 19 whipcord articles, all in solid mélange twill shades ranging light to dark from the iconic fawn (WB16201) to brown, navy and charcoal. The quality is a mid-weight 13oz pure wool and the fabric is durable and hardwearing. It is frequently tailored as plain front or forward - pleat trousers and pairs nicely with suede chukka boots, brushed cotton shirts, tweed jackets or a navy blazer. The cloth can also be tailored handsomely into a light topcoat, perhaps with a contrast velvet collar, fly front closure and four rows of ‘tramline’ stitching around the cuffs and hem as often styled in the above-knee-length English covert coat, a staple of any well-dressed modern man’s wardrobe.
